June 2022 Test Drive

1. CLEAN UP

The curse has broken, finally banishing the oppressive air around the city and the many sightless eyes of the accursed haniwa. Life will have to return to normal now but first there is lingering clean-up that must be attended to:

SHUTEN CLAN

The Shuten Clan is out in force to rebuild damaged storefronts. Eager oni appear in their festival happi, singing oni working tunes. You can pick up the words easily enough, join in and help out. The mood starts bright, but after a number of unlucky accidents there is less singing and more grumbling. The cursed energy left behind has made all of you much more prone to workplace accidents but the storefronts need to be scrubbed, broken glass needs sweeping, new furniture needs construction. There are any number of thumbs smashed by hammers, hands cut on saws, heads hit with falling debris or that board of wood you didn’t see someone carrying towards you. It’s a cursed day to be out on the job.

Rewards will come in the form of free drinks for a week from specific bars and a generous amount of chips for the casinos. If you aren’t of age to drink or gamble? Well… they’ll look the other way this time. Have fun.

It should be noted that the uniform -- a happi, a hachimaki, and fundoshi -- is required. The Shuten Clan is very traditional, after all.

TAMAMO CLAN

The bathhouses in Tamamo clan territory remain full of bloodied water. They need to be drained and scrubbed to make them new again. However, reaching the drains is a tricky business. You can’t simply reach in to pull out the plug, you will have to wade into the water to twist it free. Easy enough, right?

Unfortunately, residual curse energy has made this a very dangerous task. Phantasmal hands will reach out and try to drag you under as you get too close to the drain. The phantasms can be distracted, so you’ll need some teamwork to succeed. Your reward is a significant amount of free bath coupons. Some of the advertised baths even have “special” properties. Take the chance to relax, you probably need it.

Those that are rejuvenated in the newly purified baths will find themselves with seemingly limitless vigor. That vigor may sometimes manifest in the form of desperately needing to fuck the first thing willing to do so. Which might turn out somewhat embarrassing...

SUTOKU CLAN

The residual cursed energy in the Sutoku Alliance territory has congregated in their many arcades. The prizes in the UFO catcher machines seem off and they keep shifting around. If you happen to win a prize, the prize slot snaps shut on your hand with amazing force: the machine out for blood. To clear the curse, the prizes need to be removed from the machines and purified with the help of a local shrine maiden. Unfortunately, the key ring to open the machines has been stolen by some of the unruly prizes. You will need to use your UFO catcher skills to fish it back out.

Try not to lose any fingers.

Other machines are shooting tokens out of their coin slots at astonishingly painful speeds. A strange phenomenon, as even the machines that take swipe cards are doing it. Where are those tokens even coming from? You will have to get the machines open and give them a deep cleaning to get all the residual blood off the coins and mechanisms. You need the same keys that are stuck inside the UFO catcher…. Better hope you can fish out the one you need.

For your troubles, you will be given unlimited free plays for a month. Perfect for winning a totally-not-cursed prize for your sweetie.

ENMA DEPARTMENT

It’s the Department of the Enma’s turn to go begging for good will. They are considered to be mostly responsible for the way the cursed haniwa were handled in the first place. Enma souls should get out on the streets and see what the people need: Food, clean water, housing repairs and maintenance, as well as exorcisms. They’re all high on people’s priority lists and most people want it done pronto. Try not to get snappy with the angry people, the department’s reputation is on the line.

The Enma is slated to give a press conference at some point. It's up to the rest of the Department to assure that there will be reception to his words. They are likely to be of grave importance to the rest of the city.

A hard day’s work is its own reward, but you’ll also get a day pass to a theme park on the edge of the city – in the name of community outreach, of course.

2. GHOST SHARKS

The very streets themselves are treacherous with residual curses. The isonades may have been intimidated out of town for the moment but the anger of their ancestors lingers in the bloody puddles that still glisten in the streets. Come too close to these puddles and spectral sharks will lunge from beneath the surface: Blood for blood! Lives for lives!

While spectral in nature, the teeth on these sharks can still do real harm to anyone they lash out at. They don’t seem to take damage in kind, but will pop and disperse for a moment when struck. The ghostly sharks are being populated by a magic totem that has been partially buried in the dirt of a local park. Destroy it and the sharks will disappear.

Unfortunately, a pack of snotty local children have taken a shine to this magic totem. They are not keen to let you take it from them, nor break it. It’s theirs. It’s special. If you’re feeling brutish or cruel, you can fight the children or deceive them, but your boss would probably suggest you try to bargain with them for appearance’s sake. They’re entirely unreasonable though, as children can be, and it will be quite a chore to get them to agree to your terms.

3. CURSED CORNERS

There are certain corners and alleyways which are simply predisposed to gather cursed energy. These areas are still haunted enough to affect the reality around you. You may experience hallucinations or visions of lost loved ones, past regrets, personal failings. These visions are played out in the area for all to see. You will remain frozen in place until your moment is done, or someone brave comes to pull you out.

Now that the worst of it is over, some of the more morbid and voyeuristic members of the public may be lurking around these haunted areas, waiting to see what horrors will be unveiled. They have out their phones and their cameras to record the show.

The cruelest of the spectators provide commentary to their social media followings as they observe. Anything for that monetization!

The biggest of the streams is a kerakera onna who goes by her channel name: Lipsticki. She leans in over the rooftops to cackle loudly at people’s misfortunes and give petty, scathing commentary about their misdeeds and failings.

4. THE ENMA SPEAKS (PLOT RELEVANT)

Outside the hospital where the Enma was being treated, there is a huge press gathering. The judge arbiter has been deemed fit enough to release. Hungry for word, journalists from every publication swarm the area. Most press-outlets in the city are controlled by the Sutoku Alliance, who have a vested interested in interrogating the Enma.

A number of other onlookers have tacked on as well, including Lost Souls both old and new. Lost Souls may even find themselves ordered to attend the statement by their faction.

It is assumed that the Enma must have something of grave importance to say, after all.

The Enma approaches the podium. He is dressed in his usual suit, his crown, and his stern expression; it puts a hush over the crowd through its tremendous pressure alone. No questions have been asked, yet, but a statement has been prepared. He clears his throat:

"The cause of the curse, the enemy of Jigokucho, is... Haniyasu. The Department's focus will be shifting to determining our next action in regards to this entity. That is all."

Just like, the Enma's secretary and a retinue of armored shinigami move to flank the Enma and guide them to a waiting limo down the steps. The press yells their questions over one another, but are pushed back. The Enma doesn't even seem to perceive them, simply focusing on getting into the car.

Unfortunately, if you're a representative for one of the factions -- especially the Department of the Enma -- that makes you fair game to hound for questioning too. Do you stand your ground or try to run away?

[ There is a thick, heady anticipation in the air - she can hear it in their voices as they prepare for it, for her, wait for that piano wire pulling taut in her to finally snap. Every trembling step an intake of breath, an amused noise. Every passing second another smooth, broad phone comes out, projecting this moment to who-knows-where. More faces, smiling territory contested by neon signage and screen glow. Something's coming, something's coming, any second.

Mima is, naturally, shocked to find out that none of them will have to know. A hand comes down on her shoulder, and she yelps in surprise - but her feet are glued firmly to the pavement, the weight of it too heavy to allow incidental startled force to budge her. His voice cuts through the droning, and slowly - stupidly, she would think later - she puts it together. He's lying for her.

She's swept away before she has time to object, her feet moving to keep up with her body as it's pushed out of the disappointed little spectator's pit. She doesn't see the tallest of the shadows when she twists to look back.

Mima turns back again, in shellshocked silence. A gentle tremble still racks her as she tries to move the words in her mouth, watching her feet move beneath her.
]

I got-- [ All those months of acting lessons and handshake events aren't helping her at all here, not while her tongue feels like a flat stone in her mouth, ] --lost.

[ Does she realize yet that she doesn't have to play along anymore? ]

[Man, he's seen a lot of shit in his lifetime, but it's not often that he's seen someone so worked up without a much more serious, obvious foe to deal with. Sure, Miss Lipsticki hadn't exactly been keeping a flattering commentary going, and she still isn't, but had it really been enough to break this poor girl so badly?

Doesn't matter. He knows full well that he's not equipped to help much more than this, especially without the money and power he's used to having. Just getting her somewhere safe and being another body, another set of ears, will have to suffice.
]

You really did, huh? That's okay, at least we found each other ☆ Your hair looks really pretty tonight, by the way!

[He also looks behind them, just for a second, to make sure that they've put enough distance between the dissipating crowd and themselves, before he stops and looks Mima in the eye.] ...Anything you want to talk about? Not here, but-- not like I have anywhere better to be, and I think you need a friend right now~

[ He sweeps her along through the narrow thoroughfare like a strong current. Though Mima had barely registered the kerakera onna during her unraveling, she can feel her leering eyes and black grin recede behind her, a shrill and disappointed moan shivering at her back.

She keeps her gaze steady on the pavement rapidly passing just ahead of them, and lets herself be guided away. The uncertainty is strange and precarious - she has no idea who he is, or why he's helped her, or what he stands to gain from doing so - but being guided from that anticipatory ring of spectators feels worth the risk. And besides, it at least means her thoughts have a new chewtoy as they move away. Gradually, as they move, the number of flickering faces in the corners of her eyes dwindle. The presence of another person, unknown and loud as he seems to be, balms her.

She's pulled to a stop almost as suddenly as she was moved, and his eyes pin her own. Mima shrinks, just a little, and clings to the strap tight at her shoulder. She doesn't leave him unanswered, though.
]

... Thank you. [ She had to say that much, her voice timid but warm with genuine thanks, before she forgot her manners again. ] But--

[ The prickle in her scalp makes her think about the starfish she'd seen early on in her career - at one of the large city aquariums, when she still left her apartment and sought out various, trivial amusement throughout Tokyo. Thousands of skinny little appendages, lifting the fat five-fingered body from that slippery-looking stone, crawling slowly away. She draws her chin down a little, like a cautious animal, and speaks in a low voice. ]

Why did you help me?

[ It's not an accusation, or a symptom of a spoiled ingrate - but a genuine question posed to him. ]

[Ah, no eye contact? That's okay. He's met people too shy or terrified to make eye contact with him before, but that was when his reputation entered the room half an hour before he did. At least he can understand why Mima might feel the same way, if he actually stops to think about it.

The real quandary is: does he have a satisfactory answer?

He knows he doesn't. And yet, Aster's going for the honesty policy, even if it's an ugly little truth about himself. Might as well start his stay in this place off right.
]

...Someone else was getting attention, and I hate when that happens. But when I saw you were scared, I don't know...

That's not the sort of attention anyone should be getting. What else was I going to do? Just leave you there after I saw you in trouble? I don't do that to girls.

[Men? Yeah, whatever. He's a yaoi, and men are just sexual objects or money-making vehicles for him. There's a good chance that he's the reason his canon's about to get an idol event for summer, so he contributes to shitty idol culture! Thanks, Aster!] It's okay, you don't have to feel like you owe me or whatever either ♡ I'll just...Take you somewhere safe, make sure you can calm down, and then I'll leave you alone, if you like.

[ --okay, she doesn't know what she expects to hear, but it isn't that.

Mima bridles, very slightly, as she looks up at him, in an unguarded moment of surprise as he admits that he intervened due to mere, petty jealousy - due to wanting the attention for himself. She could dream up a couple of reasons why someone might step in over what they'd seen in that alleyway, courtesy of all of the people who had stopped to record whatever breakdown resulted when she finally overwhelmed to snapping, None of them could reduce to simply wanting to command that audiences of slashing smiles and held breaths for themselves.

Or, she should say, that that was why he had intervened at first. The nobler inspiration had, apparently, taken the reins and directed the rest of his actions in halting what he'd seen playing out.

The frank admission earns him something for his trouble - a surprised smile, one that touches her eyes, and a disbelieving little giggle.
]

Oh. [ There's not much else she can say to that, except for this; ] Well, um... thank you. But... do you really think you wanted that attention?

[ She can't imagine it, but judging from what she's taking in of him now, she gets the inexplicable feeling that the answer is probably somewhere in the affirmative, at least. and joke's on you aster enjoy the goblin idol fans in the age of twitter

And he surprises her again by announcing that he will take her to some unnamed safe haven, awakening every bone in her modest country-mouse body telling her to tell him he doesn't need to do any of that - as well as a fresh twist in her gut, leftover from navigating these types of kindnesses from men while she still worked in idol.

But, for as much as she wants to avoid putting him out... that was scary. There might not even be some friendly attention-hungry savior ready to swoop in and outdo her next time.
]

You-- you don't have to do that, if it's an inconvenience. [ Demurring is practically a second instinct for her, ] But... if you wouldn't mind, I don't know where much is yet.

...I could turn it around if I really tried~ I was made to distract people and attract the eye, huhuhu. And you're tough competition, with how pretty you are...So it was just smarter to escape instead of trying to compete.

[Literally made, of course. Aster is very much flesh and blood, but he likely still qualifies as a flesh construct of some sort. Who knows how Familiar magic works? Not him, not really, and thinking about it leads to all sorts of identity crises, so--

Better to focus on Mima's eyes lighting up, even just for a moment. That's a relief, that she's clawing her way back from whatever edge she'd been pushed to; Aster can't help but mirror her smile enough to show both little snagglefangs off without quite meaning to, taking his beret off and sweeping into a bow.
] It's okay ☆ I'm new to this place too, so we can find out some really cute little cake shop or something together!

...If we were at home, I'd be able to treat you like a real gentleman. Booooo, I hate it here already~ What are you missing from home? [Casually asked as he offers an elbow, like he qualifies as any sort of escort despite being severely nerfed and...Probably her exact height or something.] I miss being able to buy whatever cakes I wanted, and having all of my fancy teas...And my dogs! They should have at least brought my dogs along too ☆

[ She nearly believes him.

That slowly dispersing ring they'd left behind was far from an audience, of course. They weren't circling in the hopes that they would be intentionally entertained, that they would witness some show of extravagant talent. They were waiting for something to laugh at - even Mima realizes this much. If some actual entertainment had broken out before their outstretched phones, she's sure they wouldn't have actually been happy without some carrion to go with it.

But Aster is a type she's seen before - in peppy, commanding idol girls, with personalities too big to miss straight from their debuts. Those were the types of girls who left mall sentai shows behind and went on to actual concerts. Mima had never been dissatisfied with the state of CHAM!, their fanbase had always been large and devoted enough to continue booking venues and earning her meager little living. That was enough for her to know that she was doing enough right, at least. But they were the kind of girls who, as inspiring as they could be, had always left Mima with the thin, vague sense that she must look terribly bland in comparison, leached pale by their mere presence.

If anyone could turn the circling vultures into avid spectators, though, beaks filed down to reveal smiles, she thinks it's probably him.
]

Uh-- [ And she's used to the praise, naturally, casual comments dropped in interviews, meaningless asides from production - but none of those girls that made her feel sun-bleached and strange, as Aster does now, simply by being, had ever called her pretty, hair between her fingers, slipping behind her ear-- ] --thank you.

[ And despite his efforts, regardless of his kindness, she only feels paler and stupider the longer he speaks. The same strange sense that, while her life was not nothing, although she couldn't bring herself to jealousy or longing for exorbitance, it summed up to very little. As though it were not enough that her mere countenance bleeds away in front of his, her life also pales before his own. He speaks of more than a commute and four cramped walls. He kept dogs and expensive tea. What could she talk about from her life? Dead fish, a bicycle, and milk in glass bottles - an exorbitant 50 yen of extra luxury?

Not a very good conversation. Thankfully, she doesn't dwell in the inadequacy for very long - after a minute of thought, she thinks of the perfect half-truth; a luxury which she could not indulge in at home.
]

Um... do you like parfaits? [ Mima smiles... a little guiltily. ] The big ones. With soft ice cream, and fruits, and... [ Her nose scrunches a little as she tries to get her mouth around the word-- ] panna cotta.

[ If Tadokoro didn't kill her first, Rumi would. ]

Huhuhu ♡ It's okay, it's the truth! I don't just tell anyone they're on my level of cuteness.

[It's plain to see that she needs confidence, a good strong dose of it enough to knock a horse over, but all of the building blocks for something great are there. If they were only at home, he could doll her up in real finery, take her to balls and things and watch the nobles fall over themselves to be near those big doe eyes and that cute little button nose.

Alas. They aren't at his manor with expansive gardens and hundreds of butlers and maids. They're wandering around in a city neither of them knows, and he's broke for the first time in his lifetime, so even when Mima describes her dream parfait and Aster feels his mouth start to water...Ugh. Is this really what poor people feel like? Oh well, at least it's a goal for them both. Goals are what'll keep them going forward in a place like this.
]

I love sweets! Unless they're too, too sweet, but if it's a parfait with fresh fruit, then it'd be fine...What's a panna cotta, though? Ohhhhhh, I'm starving...You're lucky you're so pretty and sweet, or else I'd be sulking right now instead of thinking that I'm lucky we're friends ♡ What are your thoughts on trying to get men to buy us things, and then running away so that we don't have to actually pay attention to them?
