February 2022 Test Drive

MAIN NAVIGATION

1. ENTRY

It feels like a dream as you wake up in what appears to be a government office. It is remarkably mundane: white walls, small screens with the number that is being served and at what desk, chairs along the perimeter of the room, and pleasant music playing from unseen speakers. There's nothing out of the ordinary, right?

Then you take a look at the inhabitants in the office: Lost Souls and youkai alike make up the ranks of a never-ending line in front of a desk manned by an akaname in a suit. However, another youkai, a hyakume, is your first contact in this world. You're instructed to take a number and stand in the queue. Take a seat if you want– but you're reminded to be quick when your number is called or you'll be passed by.

Congratulations: you're in Hell.

If you're lucky, you're in line behind a fellow Lost Soul. If you're less lucky, you're stuck behind any number of youkai that may be disturbing to look at or ones that may actively try to harm you. The ones with long arms may even try to steal your ticket from further back in the line.

Make small talk, try not to freak out, and keep your ticket safe (or maybe try to steal a better one) as you make your way up in the line.

2. THE CITY

Once you've been processed through the line, you're given your assignment to one of the four possible clans with directions to their respective clan offices. The city itself looks remarkably similar to a modern Japanese city, complete with narrow alleyways connecting wider streets. Glaring neon signs advertising various businesses compete for your attention, even the most mundane businesses.

Once you tear your attention away from the myriad distractions, your task is to find your way to the office. The akaname didn't exactly give you clear directions, just a piece of paper with an address printed on it. You’re on your own to find your way there.

  • Those assigned to the Shuten Clan are directed to the gambling district.
  • The Tamamo Clan members are directed to the red light district.
  • New members of the Sutoku Alliance are pointed to the entertainment district.
  • Those assigned to The Department of the Enma are sent to the administrative district.
Ask your fellow Lost Souls for directions or stubbornly find your way to the office all on your own. No matter how you get there, once you've made your way to the office you're given your lodgings (for rookies, it’s always the cheapest inn or apartment block in the area) and told to go out and get a feel for the city.

3. STREET FIGHT - SHUTEN TERRITORY

Scuffles break out all the time in Jigokucho, especially in the district dominated by the Shuten Clan. Whether it's a rival clan posturing over someone being on the wrong turf, shakedowns of all sorts, or just someone with a chip on their shoulder picking a fight: it always draws a crowd of onlookers.

No matter what street you're going down or what you're on your way to do, there always seems to be a fight to block the way. Take a look, take bets, or maybe you're the one caught in the brawl. Maybe someone decided they didn't like the way you looked at them or maybe they're trying to catch you in a petty scam. You may also feel the need to step in when fights are looking particularly one-sided.

Get used to this happening.

4. STICKY PAWS - SUTOKU TERRITORY

One of the more adorable features in the city is a cat cafe. Located within Sutoku territory, it always draws a steady crowd. If you're lured in by the adorable cats in the window, you're welcomed into a pleasant, cat-friendly environment with cats of every shape, color, and size lounging on various surfaces while being doted on by patrons. Of course not everything is as it seems: these are no ordinary cats. They're bakeneko in disguise and this cafe is a clever way to spirit away a few more coins for the Sutoku Alliance's coffers.

You may notice your wallet is a few (thousand) bills lighter at some point during your visit or your wallet may be missing entirely. Maybe it was one of your fellow patrons helping themselves while you were playing with a cat or maybe it was one of the cats. Who's to say? You quickly realize this place is not on the up and up; you have to do something about it.

Chase down one of the cats, confront your fellow patrons, or maybe try to shake down the owner for information. The latter won't get you very far, but maybe it'll make you feel better about losing your cash to a cute scam.

5. HELP WANTED - TAMAMO TERRITORY

CW: potentially NSFW, optional aphro

If you find yourself in the red light district, you might find yourself pulled into something else entirely. A scout in front of one of the numerous clubs drags you in off the street, assuming you're from the Tamamo Clan. It doesn't matter if you are or not, the scout is not listening to your protests. They say something about staffing shortages as you're shoved into the employee area of the club. The club manager then pushes some clothes at you and tells you to get out onto the floor once you're dressed. It might be a host club, it might be a bikini or banana bar, or maybe something even more salacious – whatever it is, you're working there for the night.

There are also barkers aggressively recruiting clients for these clubs, promising a good time for anyone who wants it. Whether it be the company of a pretty host or hostess, the lurid appeal of a strip show, or perhaps even other pleasures of the flesh: there's plenty to tempt even the most resistant.

Work at a club for the night or partake in the pleasures. Drinks flow like water, some with a little something extra to help things along. Everything is transactional here. As you have the money, you're bound to find something that tickles your fancy.

With this getup, I'm pretty sure I've gotten some good tips for showing off my legs. [Monts smiles brightly and waggles her brows playfully.]

If I scoot even closer to the customer, they're bound to order another round of the fancier liquor when I offer to place an order. So you know, if I'm gonna dress in this, it has to do some work for me.

[Oh, and on the other topic, Ciel catches on quick. It's a kind sort of frankness that Monts appreciates. It doesn't appear as heavy or overbearing as Iona's brand of kindness could be and the less she needs to explain about her lack of sensation, the better. So she rotates her feet so that light shines directly on her ankles and heels.]

Yeah. It's hard for me to feel anything extreme. This usually takes care of itself, but it seems that I'm physically slower than usual.

[Her wounds are supposed to close up, no fuss, no problem. Instead, it's what can only be kindly called, a snail's pace.]

1/2

Now you're making me wish I was given something easier to move in, hehe. As long as they stay respectful, take what you can get!

[She's happy to humour along and cheer a coworker on, it's only natural to maximize the use of one's assets after all. That's only as far as skinning men work is involved though, as the situation with the other girl's... not just feet but entire nervous system (maybe?) is much more serious.]

[personal profile] expiera 2022-02-24 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds worrisome... Were you like this before, too? ["Before", as in before this town. Ciel's still not sure if she really wants to call it 'Hell'.] But I think I know what you mean, there's a dampening of powers going on. We're in a different world, so it does make sense that we're also subjected to a new set of rules, which can change things about ourselves that we've always been used to before.
nerine: (So this is the coming of age)

[personal profile] nerine 2022-02-24 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm...

[There's a small hum under her breath. Then she nods.]

My body's been like this for a while.

[At least since she was a child and 'woke up' on that fateful day in that dark and sandy cave. That's an entirely different story that will not be breached for a while though.]

... The problematic thing is, is that I still can't feel pain, but if my body isn't fixing itself as usual, then it means I'm less sturdy. I'll have to take my time if I do get injured.

[Would it actually level things out more and put her on the same rung as anyone who does feel pain? She's not sure.]

I see, so that's what you were used to.

[She mulls over this seriously, one hand cupping her chin while a small line draws at her brows.]

Please do. New environment aside, we still don't know how dangerous things may get if a turf war breaks out or certain demons starting acting hostile towards us, a leg injury would be especially bad to risk. Maybe you can ask to stay at the reception bookkeeping for the rest of your shift, if you really want to finish it in full? I won't tell you to quit and work somewhere else that isn't as physically taxing, but please take better care care of your body, miss. Pain is a warning sign intrinsic to our sense of self-preservation, and while you may not have needed to listen to it before, you can't ignore it anymore. At least, not until we understand better what's really happened to all of us.
nerine: (Uncross my fingers hesitate)

[personal profile] nerine 2022-02-26 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Monts lets out a heavier sigh than intended.]

I know, I know.

[Her self-preservation is somewhat twisted in that she's always been careful more for other people's comfort than her own. Her grandparents, especially her grandfather tried to make sure, that even if their granddaughter didn't understand the most basic of physical hurts, it didn't mean she had to be injured constantly.

Monts drums her fingers against her forehead before continuing.
]

Do you know what's funny? When they let us know what the deal was here in the government office, I thought that if this was some type of hell, maybe I'd know what it was like.

[What pain was, that is.]

Ah, forget about it. I think doing some bookkeeping will keep my mind off things and the manager off our backs.

[personal profile] expiera 2022-02-26 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Monts' heard this spiel more than just a few times already, hasn't she? It's the sort of sigh that was, but the fact that she's getting something she already knows repeated to her by someone she just met likely also means she's never really taken such concerns to heart to begin with. ...That, and/or the other person is overly nosy? Well, maybe, but still--]

...

[There's no helping it; Ciel'll let it go for now.]

I do agree that this place has been surprisingly... ["Normal"? "Mundane"? "Nice"? None of it quite fits, and using such words may hint towards her own murky perception of worlds and their danger level, ahem.] okay so far, but people tend to exaggerate when it comes to 'hell' too. They make a lot of assumptions about places they've never been before. [It's probably both ironic and blasphemous for her to muse about this, but given the circumstances, maybe Our Father In Heaven would turn a blind eye to Japanese Hell?]

Yes, please do. I'll go find you some ice, too. [Maybe a side trip to wherever they store all these fancy clothes the establishment seems to be chock full of, for being able to dress anyone they grab off the streets into something nice on the spot? Even a pair of flat slippers may help?]
nerine: (It's a Wii Date)

[personal profile] nerine 2022-02-27 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Ciel's offer is met with a pleasant smile, wiping the melancholy she just witnessed away.]

Thanks for the trouble.

[Monts doesn't practice Catholicism anymore, much to her grandmother's chagrin. Still, maybe it's fine that Monts didn't take the version they talk about at total face value especially since her world had only opened up so much more about a year ago. At least in this Hell, there were more than enough friendly faces like this girl with glasses right here.]

In the future, if you need someone to throw out a touchy customer, I'm your girl. I can at least promise you that.

It's the least that I can do, and thank you for the offer, haha. I'll keep that in mind! [She probably won't need it, but the sentiment IS appreciated.] Be right back, and please, do take it easy now!

[More a gentle reminder than any form of reproach, she gives a friendly wave before embarking on her journey for search of some ice, and maybe also a pair of flat-heeled shoes. She THINKS she's eyeballed the other girl's size well enough...? Maybe get half a size bigger just in case, wouldn't hurt to have more space.

Monts better be SEATED when Ciel gets back, at the bench or if not, the reception counter. Is she seated??]
nerine: (New Age Dreaming)

[personal profile] nerine 2022-02-27 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[No standing up here, oh no. Monts remains seated glancing down at her ankles every now and then. She's not used to her injuries lingering on her person and it's viewed with the fascination of a child looking at their scabs. Gross, but it is what it is.

The manager is glaring at Monts from behind the wall and the latter is just trying to wave her off.
]

10 more minutes Ms. Manager. Someone's getting me ice.
