(OVERFLOW) AUGUST 2022 TEST DRIVE

1. SHUTEN TERRITORY - Muscling In
art by tohdraws
In the aftermath of the curse crisis, the Shuten Clan forgave a bunch of protection payments in the region, and helped cover the costs for rebuilding. Unfortunately, some of the street gangs in the area are much less civically minded. They have used the Shuten's relaxed policies as an opportunity to turn their own screws on the local business owners. These unaffiliated youth gangs have been much rougher with the locals, and have been asking for even larger collection fees. This has pissed off the folks who are just trying to get their lives and businesses back on track!
Unfortunately, the opening of Sai no Kawara in the underground drew so much of the clan's focus and manpower, that the issues up top just slipped through the cracks. Until now! Toraguma is in a bad mood and is looking for people to take it out on: the youth gangs will do just fine.
Volunteers are being solicited to join the regular Shuten enforcers in driving these interlopers out of Shuten territory. The gangs are wise to the usual Shuten tactics, though, and they're prepared for a fight. They are also appealing to the influx of Lost Souls: they act as though they're the victims of the factions' power struggles! They propose that taking up arms against the Shuten Clan will win them favor with the other groups in the city. (It will look less good with the Shuten Clan, should you be assigned to them.)
Fight with the Shutens, or with the gangs. Either way, a fight is coming.
2. TAMAMO TERRITORY - Throat Goat (NSFW)
at by akai riotThis prompt is overtly sexual in nature. Please use the proper NSFW labelling in your top levels and threads.
While the Palace of Sai in the underground is doing well, that doesn't mean the other businesses in the Tamamo Clan's collection have been slacking. One of the least "classy" soaplands has decided they're going to hold a contest to drive up business for themselves! They are partnering with some of the other sex clubs in the area for the sleaziest of events.
The Hyottoko Cup is looking for volunteer participants! The competition is pretty straightforward: a ruler is drawn on the throat of each participant and an array of members is presented to swallow. Whichever contestant can take the guests deepest and longest will take home the "coveted" Hyottoko Cup! Ok, there's a little judge favoritism involved too, so put on a show.
The guests have likewise been pulled in as volunteers, with instructions that they don't have to make this easy on the participants. Guests are provided with special seals that they can use for the length of the competition to enhance their natural assets. For those lacking the equipment entirely, there's a seal for that too.
Have fun and play nice.
3. TAMAMO TERRITORY - Strike a Poise (GEN)
Other businesses looking to jump start this month's earnings are also getting in on the spirit of competition! Businesses less oriented towards sexual service have come together as a means to draw in the high dollar clients, and one local club has proposed something old school.
Sign up for the Poise Contest, where contestants are placed into more and more ridiculous geta while tasked with serving drinks to the guest. Spills are expected, and the guests are cheerfully kitted out with cheap club-branded ponchos to protect their clothes. (Marketing, am I right?) While spills are expected, the contestant will lose points for each of the spilled drinks. Try to keep your balance as you attend to increasingly absurd drink orders. The intensity of the traditional footwear will only make your job that much harder.
Do you have what it takes to pour a champagne fountain while wearing teetering tengu geta? Prove your balance and dexterity is the best and the take home prize is some sweet cash. For Lost Souls freshly in the city, the chance to win some extra money can't really be passed up, huh…
4. SUTOKU TERRITORY - Jigokucho's Got Talent
Ever since Moonday's beloved singer – Ringo-chan – was kidnapped at the Tanabata festival, the band has had to cancel all of their scheduled gigs. Unfortunately, they were a hugely popular act, booked solid in most of the Sutoku Alliance's various nightclubs. This has left a ton of empty spots that need to be filled quickly, before the crowds get upset and demand… refunds.
That's where you come in, Lost Souls! Desperate promoters and talent bookers are literally grabbing Lost Souls off the street and begging, pleading, with them to perform a set for the night. They just need to have something to fill the space Moonday would have otherwise occupied. At least give the crowd something to see!
Acts do not need to be of the musical variety. Any performing talent is accepted, no matter how esoteric or bizarre! If it can fill out a 15-30 minute set, the club owners will be happy and the customers will at least see something interesting; even if it's a bad kind of interesting. So get on stage and show this city what you've got!
( Help us fill our time slots, please! We're desperate! 😩)
5. DEPARTMENT OF THE ENMA - Sticky Paws II: Outta the Bag
The Enma Department is busy: they have a kidnapping to investigate, a primordial god to pin down, and the crisis of their ever-shifting public image to manage. However, crime never sleeps and is always there to add to the troubled Department's workload. Worse still, we thought this little crime spree was over six months ago! But here it is again, much to the Enma's chagrin.
Cat cafés are a popular tourist attraction all across Jigokucho. About six months ago, a gang of bakeneko infiltrated several of the cafés to rob customers occupied with kitty bliss. Wallets, jewelry, and anything else those sticky paws could snatch away were being picked in droves. The cat capers are afoot once more!
Are you a hapless victim of these furry thieves, or are you helping the Department of the Enma track down these cat burglars? Unfortunately, the bakeneko are exceptionally clever and are using a seal to disguise their secondary tails. This makes them look just about like any normal cat. Better make sure your lead is good, or you'll be chasing down an ordinary Felis Catus. Soft to pet, but not going to return your pilfered cash.
Of course, the café staff might be in on this caper too… It's never easy to tell who's getting a cut of the profits. Be careful who you trust out there.
6. ALL OVER - The 100 Billion Yen Man (PLOT RELEVANT)
The local TV news has been announcing that Kaberou Kannazaki – the legendary finance wolf and the father of kidnapping victim, Ringo-chan – will be making an announcement this week. People have flocked to television sets throughout the city; at the squares, around TVs in bars, electronic stores, each other's phones, and any other venue with a connection. The kidnapping has been a highly public ordeal and the talk of the town. Many of the locals were present at the festival and witnessed the crime. They want to hear what the word is!
The public doesn't have to wait long. Wolf-eared Kaberou sits at a press desk, surrounded by microphones, and dazzled with flashbulbs. He clears his throat and, as he begins to speak, he is direct and to the point; not unlike a wolf lunging for the throat."As of today, I am issuing a bounty on the man known as the Iron Bear, who has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of my daughter, Ringo Kannazaki. The payout to the party responsible for bringing me Iron Bear, dead or alive, is 100 Billion Yen. Individuals or groups, I don't care. Just bring my daughter back to me, and the money is yours."
Well! The Department of the Enma's hopes of an orderly investigation have been dashed, but this is certainly an opportunity for anyone brave enough – or, more accurately, stupid enough – to traverse the Wasteland. Maybe one of you out there will find the legendary Iron Bear and bring him to some form of justice.
Local businesses are quick to leap at this opportunity, too. They begin to aggressively push sponsorships at would-be bounty hunters. Weapons? Armor? Survival gear? All at discount prices! Each faction has their interest in collecting the massive bounty as well. They will all be putting a lot of pressure on recruits to get ready to head out to the Wastes.
If you just got here? Well, it would definitely be in your interest to start finding gear, and finding people willing to collect that bounty with you. It could mean a big step forward toward your eventual contract, after all.

[Technically, they were at peace now- not that it ever seemed to matter much. Watching Bradley stride towards him with purpose, the man simply stands, smiling, still unmoved by his swagger.] Ahaha, what, are you curious?
[Matoba smoothly transfers the bundle to his other arm, and slips his fingertips into the fold of one side. What an impatient one. Aggressive, and not very subtle- well, it'd be fun to see how he'd react, if nothing else.] Shall I show you?
Alright. Come here.
[The man turns his head. As Bradley draws closer, the paper that covered the right side of his face was more visible. Painted with strange runes, the warding magic was tangible enough, but the vibes of what was behind it was-- off. Subtle, but with a pull like something malice-filled was being drawn towards it from afar. Cursed.]
[Matoba's fingers draw outward from the package, something long and thin between them- like sticks...?]
no subject
He only stops in his tracks when he notices the paper covering Matoba's face, and can feel that something's not normal about it. He'll wait for him to pull whatever sticks he has with him, but his attention is fully on Matoba's face now, anyway. ]
...What happened there? You cursed? Who did ya piss off?
[ Because obviously he must have pissed someone off. Look at him. ]
no subject
[A human with power like himself, or a monster? He wonders which one this man is.]
So you can sense that, can you? [Instead of satisfying Bradley's curiosity right away, he tucks the sticks back into his bundle and raises a hand to tap the paper ward.] If you want to know, I can tell you, but I'll only answer you one of these things or the other.
Which would you like to know? The story of my eye? Or to see my bounty? Pick one.
[An infuriating thing, isn't it, to dangle a toy in front of a cat only to snatch it away at the last moment. To dangle two and make him choose, even moreso.]
i had to google this dude's height...
He clicks his tongue, stepping closer until he's right in front of his face, looking down at him with a sharp, intimidating glare.
...Hm. Matoba doesn't smell like a western wizard, but he sure acts like one. If he's not a wizard, Bradley could easily kill him right now, he thinks. On the other hand, if he does that, he'll find out what the sticks are when he pries them away from his corpse, but not what the hell is the deal with his eye. It's not his business, but Matoba made it sound enticing and now he's trapped. UGH!!! ]
...Start talkin' about that eye of yours or I'll rip your head off.
[ Not that Matoba would know, but he shouldn't take his threat personally - that's just normalspeak for gruff northern wizards when they're being edged. ]
174cm!! smol compared to Brad u_u
[Ah, that was easy. Matoba cants his head to the side slightly, in a way that makes his hair fall away from the ward just a bit- giving a moment of consideration just to edge Bradley that bit more.]
Alright.
I am an exorcist, the current head of the Matoba clan of exorcists. Many centuries ago, my ancestor made a deal with a spirit for assistance on a job, in exchange for giving up their right eye. However, they went back on the deal, and died without paying the debt. From that point forward, that spirit has chased after each and every head of our clan, and as it continued to be evaded, its obsession twisted it into a powerful and malevolent curse.
It's rather pathetic. [Matoba's smile curls.] Despite how powerful that monster is, it isn't very smart, and just goes smashing after anything that feels like us and looks like an eye. So it's easy to fool, and when it misses after each attack, it just goes skulking off again. But because we are the target of its obsession, its spiritual power is focused upon us, increasing our own. As long as we continue to evade its unskilled attacks, we will remain the most powerful, and no one will be able to defy us.
[He watches Bradley, interested in his reactions, what he would think of such a sordid tale.]
...Does that satisfy your curiosity, Scary-and-Cool-san?
good, brad likes to win.
Hah? So you're cursed by a stupid monster? Not even a cool one? ...How dumb are ya?
[ This reminds him of someone that comes from back home, too. Not the curseworker that could heal him, no. A weirder one that's staying here, actually. ]
Y'know, I know a guy with an eyeball fetish. He could probably rip this thing outta ya in no time. I'd rather puke than seek him out myself, but if you ever run into him, just call him names or something. He's easy to provoke. Be careful he doesn't kill ya, though.
[ He leans in again, reaching for the sticks this time. ] So what the hell is this?
[ Yes, he already forgot about the "one or the other" thing. ]
no subject
Anything can be useful, with the proper situation- from the weakest human to the most powerful gods. But that is interesting. I wonder who this individual is?
[He has some guesses- he can't tell exactly what this man is, but there was something... familiar about the aura that he couldn't put his thumb on. As Brad makes a swipe again for his package, Matoba steps out of the way at last, to his left side.]
If you want a second answer, you're going to need to pay for it somehow.
Let's see... What is your name?
no subject
Lucky for him, he likes that he's gutsy, so he gets nothing more than a smug grin - especially because he asked who he is, and that's easily one of his favorite questions in the world. ]
I'm the Northern Wizard, Bradley. Leader of the most notorious gang of bandits in the world.
[ Former leader. Former world. Details. ]
Who the hell are you?
no subject
[Matoba says it derisively, his eye flattening into distaste as if an inevitability on the universe has made itself known to him. He sighs. The North... that would be where that monster Owen had said he was from. At least he wasn't another Western wizard.]
As mentioned, I am Matoba, an exorcist. But don't worry, Bradley, plenty of your little friends have already made themselves quite comfortable here.
Don't compare me to that Owen again, and I will show you what's in the package, hm?
[At last, Matoba reaches into the bundle again and pulls out a single arrow, pristinely shaped. It was long, longer than an arrow for a western-style bow, and gave off a sensation like something inhuman should not touch it.]
The Shuten clan is bothersome, for sure, but they make excellent weapons.
no subject
You know Owen? Haha.
[ Okay, that's hilarious. Owen can make people everywhere dislike him, yeah. He's paying attention to his hands when he pulls out the arrow, rubbing his chin. He can feel the aura on it - not as strong as he normally would, but it's there. And if this guy's really an exorcist, he knows better than to go around touching it.
Tsk. There goes his loot. ]
An arrow? Whaddya want that for?
no subject
[Matoba spins the arrow in his fingertips, held as if he were to put it to a knock.] To kill monsters, of course.
[He carefully slides it back into its fabric wrapping with the others, taking care to smooth out some of the feathers.]
I am told that the humans of your world cannot use magic naturally. Well, that is not the case in my own. My natural enemies are all around us now, but as it currently stands I am a Lieutenant within the Sutoku Alliance, so these meatheaded brutes would be foolish to attack me in broad daylight, now.
But these unaffiliated ones you've taken care of- they are likely trying to stir up tensions between our clans intentionally. You've conveniently removed an obstacle for me, so how about I tell you something else good in return? If you are here in Shuten, I suppose that means there is one of you wizards in each of the four organizations that rule this city.
I am sure you will figure out where the rest are for yourself.
no subject
On the other hand, if Owen can die on this place, it might not be the worst thing to run into him… hm… ]
A lieutenant, you? A scrawny exorcist with only one eye? [ He scoffs. ] That's some pretty nasty slim pickings this place has.
Hey. Where'dya see Owen? I wanna try somethin'.
no subject
[He gives Bradley a good look up and down, as if he were the one sizing him up. The corner of his mouth curls.] That's right. I suppose you do belong in Shuten after all, don't you? You'll learn. Since power is all your type understand, it shouldn't be too difficult for you to guess. You've even seen my weapon.
As for Owen... [For a moment, the exorcist seems to mull over the request.] I could tell you where you might find him, but what do I get out of it? You're a new arrival with no power or influence.
...But you should know some information about the others, right? Tell me... I have heard that some of you suffer "afflictions" brought about by your cursed moon. This Great Calamity I've heard so much about. How common are they? What sorts of curses do you suffer as a result?
no subject
So you know about us wizards, huh. And you're holding information on Owen's whereabouts hostage in exchange for me selling out my own?
[ He looks at him seriously for a second, then... he can't help but laugh boisterously, patting Matoba's shoulder harshly as he does. ]
Hahaha! You're a riot, one-eyed exorcist! Owen's a cockroach, he'll find me before I find him, that's for sure, so I don't really need your info!
And I dunno who else is here, but I was willing to sell all of them out for free! Offer's expired, though. I'll tell ya what you wanna know if you tell me where I can get good fried chicken around here.
no subject
Value your dirt a little more.
[It's hard to tell if he's being sarcastic... Anyway, Matoba points down the main street that the thugs were still terrorizing down the way. He'd have to fight his way through, but surely Bradley can handle that just fine.] Two blocks that way, then turn right and another 3 blocks. There is an izakaya run by the Shuten clan with excellent fried chicken and grilled skewers. I had it at a festival a few months ago.
Don't mention I sent you. They'll probably kick you out. [Matoba smiles.] So? About those afflictions.
no subject
Over there, huh? All right, I know where I'm heading.
[ He was about to leave, but he turns to him again. ]
Right, the afflictions. No idea why you wanna know, but it's not somethin' I can explain on an empty stomach. You're comin' with me and showin' me this joint, yeah?
no subject
[Matoba squints slowly at Bradley's invitation, trying to determine if the wizard was stupid or deaf.] ...I did just tell you they would kick you out if you mentioned me, didn't I?
[Oh well. As if Matoba wouldn't delight in starting a problem for a new Shuten recruit in a Shuten establishment. After a moment, he folds his free hand into the fold of his kimono and falls into step beside the wizard.]
I am not paying for you, if that was your intention. And if you intend to make an enemy of your own clan on your first day, I suppose I will let Shylock-san know to pour one out for your grave.
I have watched Toraguma remove a head in the past month.
[Matoba is in a strangely good mood as he describes this.]
no subject
Before he can say anything else, however, Matoba namedrops Shylock casually, and it makes Bradley turn to look at him. ]
Shylock's here, too? [ That's sort of good news, since Shylock is one of the few he actually likes, but then... ] Other than Shylock and Owen, is there anyone else?
If you wanna know about the afflictions, I'll have to know this, too. It's a case-by-case kinda thing.
[ Which is true, though technically that's not exactly why he wants to know who else is here... ]
no subject
[...Sigh, well now he's distracted again. Matoba makes another face, but since now he's talking about the afflictions, he supposes he'll allow it.] So you are familiar with Shylock-san, hm? I am aware of his affliction, actually. That is how I became a bit interested in them.
...I could tell you the others, I suppose... Or... How about this? [Matoba smiles towards him, bright and mischievous.] I will describe them, and you tell me the name of who you think it is. Of course, it will be according to my biased observations. There are six of you in total, including yourself. So that leaves three that you do not yet know the names of.
no subject
Ah, yeah. Shylock's got a nasty one.
[ The heart on flames shit that Shylock's cat boyfriend finds hilarious, for some reason. Although, Shylock is also very talkative and open, so he's surprised to find out he didn't already tell this guy everything he wanted to know. To make matters worse, he's trying to play games with Bradley again.
He scoffs, glaring at him. ]
Or you could just tell me and not get killed right now. Unless you don't know their names at all. [ Maybe that's why he's asking? Hm. ] All right, out with it already. What do they look like?
[ Yes, he disregarded his own threat already. ]
no subject
[A-Anyway, watching Shylock's affliction take hold had certainly been an instructive experience. For one, of just how difficult these wizards were to kill; he would have to take things seriously if it ever came to that. Something which could pierce through to the extent that a magical flame such as that one could not...]
[Oh well. It was a concern for another day. For now, he has Bradley hooked on guessing games.]
Alright.
The first one... is that irritating cat.
[That's an easy one, right?]
no subject
Ah, that guy. You don't have to worry about his - not here, I guess. The pieces of his broken soul scattered all over our world are these little crystal fragments normally, but his affliction gives them physical form, so there's tons of him running around. They're smarter than he is, but just as insufferable.
[ so unless shylock brought any fragments with him since he collects them like the creep he is, there's no way murr’s affliction would be a problem, he thinks.
while heading to the place matoba specifically mentioned, he’s fighting off any kids that come their way with ease. he turns to look at him casually after clearing the path again with a grin. ]
If you see any more of the cat guy around, feel free to kill them.
no subject
Yes, that does sound insufferable. [So even these wizards had their distaste for each other.] Unfortunately, that Murr now falls under my purview as a member of the Alliance. As much as I'd love to banish him to the winds every time he opens his mouth, I think our leader would have a problem with that.
What a shame.
In any case, as for the next one........ he seems to be quite confused. [Matoba's mouth curls into a mean-spirited smile.] There's truly nothing more pathetic than a monster that thinks it is human.
no subject
[ okay, not ALL the wizards, and not with his pinky, the reason for him were different than the others, but, details.
he, pauses, when he gives that last description. ]
Hah? That's stupid. Wizards don't hide what they are - we’re loud and proud about it. [ unless… ] Except wizards from the East, I guess. Wizards are pretty hated everywhere but it's kinda bad in the East. Those guys are all cowards.
So? Does he have blond hair? Or is he a short kid with black hair? Wait, does he wear round glasses and dresses all gloomy?
[ he described all but one. ]
no subject
[It would be pretty interesting to watch, though... Matoba tucks that thought away for the moment, because egging the wizards on to fight one another would have to wait.]
My, aren't you the proud sort? Perhaps that is why so many of you were picked up by the fox, hm? But now that I think of it, this one was not. Maybe that says something about him.
[Oh? The East, wasn't that familiar? On second thought, Matoba doesn't recall where that blustering knight was from, but he's certain it was neither the West nor the North. While none of Bradley's descriptions ring true to any wizard he's met, he thinks that he will take a moment here to commit them to memory, so that if they were to appear in the future, he will know.]
Blond, black hair... No, it is neither of those. Nor was he wearing glasses. But he is a kid.
Well. A kid for your lot. [And for someone like Matoba, who dealt with ancient spirits all the time, even one whose age was the same as his own was still a child.] Shall I give you another hint? He has an affliction, too. And strange eyes.
