1. SHUTEN TERRITORY - Muscling In

In the aftermath of the curse crisis, the Shuten Clan forgave a bunch of protection payments in the region, and helped cover the costs for rebuilding. Unfortunately, some of the street gangs in the area are much less civically minded. They have used the Shuten's relaxed policies as an opportunity to turn their own screws on the local business owners. These unaffiliated youth gangs have been much rougher with the locals, and have been asking for even larger collection fees. This has pissed off the folks who are just trying to get their lives and businesses back on track!

Unfortunately, the opening of Sai no Kawara in the underground drew so much of the clan's focus and manpower, that the issues up top just slipped through the cracks. Until now! Toraguma is in a bad mood and is looking for people to take it out on: the youth gangs will do just fine.

Volunteers are being solicited to join the regular Shuten enforcers in driving these interlopers out of Shuten territory. The gangs are wise to the usual Shuten tactics, though, and they're prepared for a fight. They are also appealing to the influx of Lost Souls: they act as though they're the victims of the factions' power struggles! They propose that taking up arms against the Shuten Clan will win them favor with the other groups in the city. (It will look less good with the Shuten Clan, should you be assigned to them.)

Fight with the Shutens, or with the gangs. Either way, a fight is coming.

2. TAMAMO TERRITORY - Throat Goat (NSFW)

This prompt is overtly sexual in nature. Please use the proper NSFW labelling in your top levels and threads.

While the Palace of Sai in the underground is doing well, that doesn't mean the other businesses in the Tamamo Clan's collection have been slacking. One of the least "classy" soaplands has decided they're going to hold a contest to drive up business for themselves! They are partnering with some of the other sex clubs in the area for the sleaziest of events.

The Hyottoko Cup is looking for volunteer participants! The competition is pretty straightforward: a ruler is drawn on the throat of each participant and an array of members is presented to swallow. Whichever contestant can take the guests deepest and longest will take home the "coveted" Hyottoko Cup! Ok, there's a little judge favoritism involved too, so put on a show.

The guests have likewise been pulled in as volunteers, with instructions that they don't have to make this easy on the participants. Guests are provided with special seals that they can use for the length of the competition to enhance their natural assets. For those lacking the equipment entirely, there's a seal for that too.

3. TAMAMO TERRITORY - Strike a Poise (GEN)

Other businesses looking to jump start this month's earnings are also getting in on the spirit of competition! Businesses less oriented towards sexual service have come together as a means to draw in the high dollar clients, and one local club has proposed something old school.

Sign up for the Poise Contest, where contestants are placed into more and more ridiculous geta while tasked with serving drinks to the guest. Spills are expected, and the guests are cheerfully kitted out with cheap club-branded ponchos to protect their clothes. (Marketing, am I right?) While spills are expected, the contestant will lose points for each of the spilled drinks. Try to keep your balance as you attend to increasingly absurd drink orders. The intensity of the traditional footwear will only make your job that much harder.

Do you have what it takes to pour a champagne fountain while wearing teetering tengu geta? Prove your balance and dexterity is the best and the take home prize is some sweet cash. For Lost Souls freshly in the city, the chance to win some extra money can't really be passed up, huh…

4. SUTOKU TERRITORY - Jigokucho's Got Talent

Ever since Moonday's beloved singer – Ringo-chan – was kidnapped at the Tanabata festival, the band has had to cancel all of their scheduled gigs. Unfortunately, they were a hugely popular act, booked solid in most of the Sutoku Alliance's various nightclubs. This has left a ton of empty spots that need to be filled quickly, before the crowds get upset and demand… refunds.

That's where you come in, Lost Souls! Desperate promoters and talent bookers are literally grabbing Lost Souls off the street and begging, pleading, with them to perform a set for the night. They just need to have something to fill the space Moonday would have otherwise occupied. At least give the crowd something to see!

Acts do not need to be of the musical variety. Any performing talent is accepted, no matter how esoteric or bizarre! If it can fill out a 15-30 minute set, the club owners will be happy and the customers will at least see something interesting; even if it's a bad kind of interesting. So get on stage and show this city what you've got!

5. DEPARTMENT OF THE ENMA - Sticky Paws II: Outta the Bag

The Enma Department is busy: they have a kidnapping to investigate, a primordial god to pin down, and the crisis of their ever-shifting public image to manage. However, crime never sleeps and is always there to add to the troubled Department's workload. Worse still, we thought this little crime spree was over six months ago! But here it is again, much to the Enma's chagrin.

Cat cafés are a popular tourist attraction all across Jigokucho. About six months ago, a gang of bakeneko infiltrated several of the cafés to rob customers occupied with kitty bliss. Wallets, jewelry, and anything else those sticky paws could snatch away were being picked in droves. The cat capers are afoot once more!

Are you a hapless victim of these furry thieves, or are you helping the Department of the Enma track down these cat burglars? Unfortunately, the bakeneko are exceptionally clever and are using a seal to disguise their secondary tails. This makes them look just about like any normal cat. Better make sure your lead is good, or you'll be chasing down an ordinary Felis Catus. Soft to pet, but not going to return your pilfered cash.

Of course, the café staff might be in on this caper too… It's never easy to tell who's getting a cut of the profits. Be careful who you trust out there.

6. ALL OVER - The 100 Billion Yen Man (PLOT RELEVANT)

The local TV news has been announcing that Kaberou Kannazaki – the legendary finance wolf and the father of kidnapping victim, Ringo-chan – will be making an announcement this week. People have flocked to television sets throughout the city; at the squares, around TVs in bars, electronic stores, each other's phones, and any other venue with a connection. The kidnapping has been a highly public ordeal and the talk of the town. Many of the locals were present at the festival and witnessed the crime. They want to hear what the word is!

The public doesn't have to wait long. Wolf-eared Kaberou sits at a press desk, surrounded by microphones, and dazzled with flashbulbs. He clears his throat and, as he begins to speak, he is direct and to the point; not unlike a wolf lunging for the throat.

"As of today, I am issuing a bounty on the man known as the Iron Bear, who has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of my daughter, Ringo Kannazaki. The payout to the party responsible for bringing me Iron Bear, dead or alive, is 100 Billion Yen. Individuals or groups, I don't care. Just bring my daughter back to me, and the money is yours."

Well! The Department of the Enma's hopes of an orderly investigation have been dashed, but this is certainly an opportunity for anyone brave enough – or, more accurately, stupid enough – to traverse the Wasteland. Maybe one of you out there will find the legendary Iron Bear and bring him to some form of justice.

Local businesses are quick to leap at this opportunity, too. They begin to aggressively push sponsorships at would-be bounty hunters. Weapons? Armor? Survival gear? All at discount prices! Each faction has their interest in collecting the massive bounty as well. They will all be putting a lot of pressure on recruits to get ready to head out to the Wastes.

If you just got here? Well, it would definitely be in your interest to start finding gear, and finding people willing to collect that bounty with you. It could mean a big step forward toward your eventual contract, after all.

For Shenhe, it was just another day.

Roping her into it didn't take too long, even if it involved some manipulation once the staffers discovered she wasn't knowledgeable on how the world worked very well. This didn't just extend to the new Hell she's found herself in: Even back in Teyvat, she was a clueless outcast attempting to learn more as each day went on.

Whatever the case might be Shenhe is seated down in a seiza, arms covering her bare chest and as nude as the day she was born. Whether roped into it or willingly going along with it, somehow you've ended up in front of Shenhe on stage during the competition. ]

[ To many onlookers' surprise, Shenhe finds little to no difficulty in balancing herself on the geta. They may be a footwear unfamiliar to her, but the shoes she wore regularly combined with her martial arts training to give her an impressive amount of dexterity.

The same can not be said for her temporary "coworkers", though any drinks they've spilled are quickly caught and attended to by Shenhe herself. It's enough that one of the contest staffers has to say something to her and stop her, because how were they meant to deduct points if Shenhe's meddling made it hard to tell who spilled what?!

Still, even Shenhe could not keep things up for too long. All it took was one distraction, one misstep, until a drink slips from her hand. She catches it just fine, but the contents end up spilled right onto you. Oops. ]

[And the content is spilled right onto this particular woman. A guest that has been watching for a while, after leaving the more... Sexual-orientated competition earlier. This, while not exactly Soundwave's scene, at least was partly entertaining watching people struggling to balance themselves and spilling drinks everywhere, until one is spilled on the holoavatar.

There doesn't seem to be a reaction from the avatar (though given the mask and visor, it's hard to get a read on his expression anyway), but the avatar eventually does tilt up towards Shenhe. In a monotone, though modulated voice to fit his human appearance:]

faced with a youth gang member brandishing a pipe in his direction for emphasis isn't really the time to ponder, and pushing it aside as though its little more than an inconvenience probably isn't endearing him to the gang's cause. ]

Look, I don't know why I ought to join-

[ it earns him a punch to the face. kinder than the business end of the pipe, but Otonashi wastes no time in grabbing the shirt of the young gang member and returning the hit in kind. the issue?

there are more of them and one of him. step in? silly commentary about how maybe that wasn't the time for words? ]

[ it's simple enough: a job, a task for the promise of money. there's almost no question about his agreement to try; Otonashi ought to try to be self-sufficient.

carrying a drink housed in a tall, ornate container, he shuffles carefully in the taller-than-he'd-like geta sandals, sparing a quick downward glance (more of a glare, really) at them. his first few passes go decently well. ]

I'll take it over mass thievery, I guess... [ muttered mostly to himself, something almost centering, and self-reflective at the very least.

there's a lot of almosts here, until yet another almost save ends with him stumbling, desperately trying to catch the drink, and spilling the majority of the container's contents on himself before he stumbles to the side.

ah well, he's probably fine. ]

[ right on time: a sheepish, somewhat forced laugh. he might be giving anyone nearby (you?) a somewhat defeated look, too. who comes up with this stuff anyway? ]

[ Arguably, it was obvious that these punks aren't interested in diplomacy, at least not without getting the tar beat out of them first. Skylark's here because this is, unfortunately, part of his job, as much as he doesn't think he's a good candidate for it.

Anyway, it doesn't look too good for this guy, so Skylark picks up the lid from a trash can nearby and flings it at one of the gang members, striking him in the head and probably landing on a second person, who is startled if not actually hurt by it. ]

I really hope you're good in a fight!

(manjiro "street gang conflict" sano, blowing off such an opportunity? never, ever.

bizarre, though, isn't it? going from being the boss, calling shots on who to fight and when, to being told what to do. not exceptionally fond of it in any way, but one does what one can to find their own footing, climb to the top from somewhere, even if that's the ground. it's temporary. soon, he'll return home, to his precious tokyo manji gang, and everything will be fine. besides, what a great opportunity to make his name all over again - 'invincible' is a title that must be earned, and a possibility just fell from the sky just like that.

it hardly looks like he's trying to recover it, though. with his back against the front of a store, he stares as the fight breaks through, a lollipop swirling around his mouth as empty eyes scan the scene. the pleas of mercy from the gang do nothing to soothe nor soften the hearts of the volunteers, much less mikey's. his patience instead runs thinner, and unceremoniously, his steps lead to the tallest of them, mikey's lack of height exacerbated - until his foot meets their temple, and they fall on the ground unconscious. patting his hands, he gestures to the others, cracking knuckles.)

You like to fight, right, fuckers? Then let's fight.

(if one takes the time to read his jacket, it'll make more sense. on the back, the words 'tokyo manji gang' stand out with the symbol of the manji proudly embroiled. on the right arm, "run hard manji gang of fools", "leader of the manji corps" on the left. ah...)

(he's spoiled to the bone, but you know what's a great motivator? having money. with money, you can eat. when you eat, you get the best sleep known to men, given by the gods themselves. mikey's set isn't that artistic in anyway, it's a "simple" martial arts presentation, with boards being placed higher and higher, even when it gets ridiculous to watch when mikey's tiny. yet, he cracks them, an example of flexibility and expertise - working at it since he was three and actually living in his family dojo undoubtedly helps on top of shounen anime prodigy.

he'll come out, stretching his arms above his head and yawning. one can catch him here, but otherwise, soon mikey joins the crowd, his laughter booming as he chortles at a particularly bad number. they can probably hear it, but mikey's so overtaken by laughter there are even tears pooling in the corners of his eyes.

oh, well.)

(he's here more due to the sweets the café offers than the cats themselves. the little money he's made with kicking boards into another dimension already melting as he orders the biggest parfait they have in store. with his poor memory, the jury's out on whether he's heard about the incidents, and either way goes.

it's not important. of utmost urgency and relevance is that he has his daily quota of way too much glucose right in front of him, his mouth open and ready to receive a spoonful when he feels fur rubbing against his pocket. the look he gives the cat isn't related to the money sitting within it, but the mere possibility it might jump on the table and rob him of a cherry.)

Fucking order one yourself? With how shit's weird here, I ain't gonna be surprised if you can. Shoo, shoo.

(silence, other than the TVs turning and the volumes increasing as he strolls through the streets. it's a miracle that mikey comes into a sports shop right as the announcement rings everyone's ears, shoppers with their hands hovering over the shelves and sellers with a scowl on their faces, calculations almost tangible. a billion yen, huh? that's good money, and in his situation, he doesn't see himself passing it up.

so, he'll gather new hand bandages, and that's about it as gear. once he hears someone approaching the same aisle, black, dull eyes look up before he gestures to the television.)

(mikey's not abandoning his jacket, nor is he thinking in any way of having toman be less than it ever was. members are missing by the hundreds, but two founding ones are in front of him, and so is a captain. things could be bleaker.

he hasn't ignored how all of them have been acting strange, the looks they give both soft and concerned all the same. the way they seem endeared to death, but also as if they're taking something fragile ever so longingly in their hands, nostalgia sparkling in their eyes.

makes mikey think perhaps he did change a lot over the years. did he give up? he couldn't have, not when there were still people who held him in reality like a boulder. or perhaps they just miss the little things he did when he was younger, and that justifies it just fine, but his intuition won't let rest that something is wholly wrong.

there are more pressing matters at hand. mikey sits across the three of them, his leader position intact, and here's where it gets weird.)

I know I'm younger than you three. I know things probably have changed over the years y'all have experienced and I haven't. None of that is important right now. What is important is where are we going from now on. Are you still mine, here in Hell?

[ it's a bit funny, in his opinion, how things don't change even in hell. it's almost like he never left, really, if it weren't for the horns and tails and what-have-you. it's still a bit hard to swallow basically being shoved in the plot of a manga.

more importantly, he's staring down a three-pair, all shiny leather and masks to accompany the tap-tap of the ringleader's pipe on the ground. sure, most people would maybe appreciate the chance to earn some street cred with these factions or whatever, but mitsuya is not quite most people. he's already got a name on his back, so he's not quite eager to appeal to others. if mitsuya there's a chance to avoid a fight, then he'd honestly rather not bother.

they, however, do not appreciate their offer being turned down. something something shuten power struggles, and he's preparing to sidestep and continue on his way before a hand comes down around his arm-

and mitsuya decks the guy in the face, pipe clattering to the ground as he hits the floor ass-first with an unflattering noise. ]

I said not interested. You need me to say it again?

[ one on three...well, he's honestly had worse odds thus far. ]

[ naturally, scraps have their downsides. the bruises, the aches, and of course- the tattered clothes. he tugs at a newfound hole in his pants, one in his shirt, and mitsuya sighs so softly you wouldn't guess he was just throwing hands. naturally, this is an easy enough fix, but a quick pat proves the backup sewing kit he keeps on hand outside of fights is missing.

he's got a bit of cash left, however, so. ]

Hey.

[ yeah, you. either you just dragged yourself out of a fight yourself, or just had an unfortunate accident- either way, you're sporting some similar holes. mitsuya eyes them for a second, before looking up. ]

You know where I could find a fabric store? Or anywhere I can get a sewing kit. I'll fix ya up, in exchange.

then again, some people will not hesitate to pay any price for the ones they love...or something like that, because the way this guy acts just doesn't sit right with him, makes his lips twinge downwards in a frown and his shoe tap impatiently on the floor.

it's not really his fight, not his person to protect, but his wallet is empty and if it means dragging someone out of a conflict they don't belong in? sure. why not. if anything, he feels a bit of pity, seeing as how whoever that girl is is probably just collateral damage.

weapons, though...hard pass. he brushes past them, past the eager hands trying to show them off, and eyes up the protective gear instead. they called that place the wastelands, right...? ]

If they're pushing survival gear, it's probably pretty rough out there, huh? [ acting like it's going to be like a rough camping trip in the wilderness, or something. he picks up an undershirt, branded as particularly durable and sweat-wicking, casting a glance towards the nearest person. ] Half these people are gonna bog themselves down carrying ten tons of weapons, then it's just gonna go to shit.

(mikey isn't the one mitsuya is talking to, not in a million. that isn't how that conversation would start, he's sure. but he so happens to be turning around the corner when the familiar voice hits his ears. one he has heard extensively throughout the years, one that took the first steps into the real world of delinquency with him. the voice of reason, his most trusted mediator.

and a smile comes to his lips. one by one, the manji is showing. mikey, takemichi, kenchin, and now mitsuya. naturally they'll be in hell together.

with silent steps, mikey moves in stealth behind the taller one, hands calloused and rough, but strangely, the smell should kickstart mitsuya's memory. red bean paste, from all the sweets he eats.)

[On the one hand, they don’t want to fight. They know all they’re really good for is weaseling their way out of the fray when people are distracted, but they’re all alone in this city and don’t have any knights, princes, or nuns to use for distractions. (Or friends, you could call them, if you were normal.)

On the other, larger hand, it seems you can’t pass through this part of the city without someone trying to accost you, and they all seem pretty pissed.]

Now, now. There’s nothin’ to be gained with fightin’ someone who can’t defend themself, right?

[They have their hands up, trying to look as non-threatening as possible. It wouldn’t be all that difficult, if it wasn’t for the fact this gang has heard that some Lost Souls can do things beyond imagination, and don’t seem to be buying that Hyacinth isn’t one of them.]

Beatin’ up on me ain’t gonna send a message, y’know? It’s just cruel, not somethin’ that’ll earn ya any respect or notice. If ya wanna make a statement, it’s gotta be earned, gotta come after a challenge to make ‘em take notice…

[They’re slowly backing up as they talk, well aware their stalling is just annoying the gang. They bump into someone - another Lost Soul, it seems - and decide to take the opportunity that’s been given to them.]

Like them! This guy’s gonna be way more of a challenge than me!

[A shove at your back - which might not move you much at all - and then they’re turning tail and booking it as fast as they can now that the attention’s shifted.]

[Hyacinth is in good spirits, even as they wobble on the geta. It’s hard to walk in them, and they’re not an especially graceful or fit person to begin with. They wouldn’t consider themself clumsy, by any means, but they’ve seen grace. They know they don’t have it.

Still, that unsteadiness is the entire part of this, isn’t it? They know that the clientele is here at least in part for the show, and they’re not about to get mad about being laughed at for something they knew they wouldn’t excell at.]

[The hooded man they just shoved feels weirdly solid, like they'd just touched a brick wall, but the gesture still has its intended effect: Zelgadis, who was trying to mind his own business, is suddenly the center of attention in this altercation. He does look formidable, as promised.]

What do you think you're... -- hey!

[He turns to yell after the stranger as they flee, turning to give chase, when one of the gangsters lunges and throws a punch, apparently intending to take out this stronger opponent while his head's turned. The fist connects with his cheek... but it's the gangster who yelps in pain, shaking his hand.]

[This was stupid. Billy didn’t particularly care for the trophy being put up on offer. Seeing just how much cock one can take in their throat certainly sounded like a Tamamo thing. Granted, he did have to wonder, with some amusement, what the fox herself would think of it. Meh, well he is a member of the Tamamo gang. And they were insistent that he step in and participate.

So here he was. Billy had decided to forgo the… er, “enhancements”. He is, in no way, a cheater after all! Besides, throating dick takes a considerable amount of skill. Why make things harder for someone?]

II – The 100 Billion Yen Man

[Well, he did make a wish for something exciting to happen. But this… well, this wasn’t exactly what Billy had in mind when he asked the stars. It was something else silly, he knew. There was no way a wish to the stars, let alone a wish he had made, would end up being answered. Let alone answered in such a way as this.

But here they were. And here he is- a modicum of guilt flickering inside his stained soul. He shouldn’t be feeling that. He’s an outlaw, and he was in no way involved in the kidnapping of some bigshot’s daughter.

It didn’t help that he didn’t trust the guy. Still… tch-

Still here he was, standing outside of a gun store. Just kind of mulling it over in his head before he enters. He’s seen what was inside of Chaldea’s armory, knows about current weaponry. But had never been all that far into it.

Something about not fully trusting the outlaw to give back any firepower he might get his mitts on. Access to the Tamamo armory had been a welcome shift. But he still felt a certain draw to the more earthly conventions.]

[ Bradley doesn't quite know what the deal is or why all these kids are fighting people, but the truth is he doesn't need to know. All he sees in front of him is a good fight waiting to happen, and how can any good fight even begin without him? He's not in the business of hurting weaklings who didn't ask to get involved, however, so the fact that he's helping those terrorized by the gangsters is merely coincidental and not because he's a good guy, okay?

More than anything, it feels good to let loose once in a while. After pummeling the poor suckers in front of him with his bare hands until leaving them unconscious, he looks at his fists, snorting. It's been too long since the last time he did something like this without magic. ]

[ He's not sure why someone like him was tasked with helping with something so ridiculous, but it's not like he had a choice in the matter. After chasing and capturing a few cats, Bradley's running around the city carrying a few under his arm - most of them just regular cats, without his knowledge.

How the hell is he supposed to know what's a cat and what isn't!? Tired of running around, eventually he'll simply dump all the cats he captured and dump them inside one of the cat cafes. If they belong there or not, that's not his problem. He was tasked with helping catch as many furry felines as possible and he delivered, so there. ]

[A. The Lure of Height: Tsubaki would have ignored the request to pose. Really, truly, she would have. But that was another four to six inches of height, and she has been ridiculously short her entire life, and just once, just once, she is going to be able to see over the crowd.

Here's the problem. Tsubaki has the grace to walk in these just fine. Physically she lacks the strength to pour from a champagne bottle easily. This is about to end in disaster. I hope you're not in the splash zone.

B. CATS: On the other end of the spectrum, Tsubaki is not only not helping Enma, but is happily letting herself be fleeced by bakeneko in order to pet every kitty. She loves cats so much. She does not seem to be aware of the cats casually just removing her earrings and her wallet and probably stealing the entire pack of cat treats she brought, too.

Do you want to intervene? Or just laugh at her?

[Catching a cat is never going to be as easy as it seems, and it hardly seems easy at all to begin with. The plan is a solid one given what they have to work with but depends entirely on their own ability and speed, but so far it seems like this young woman is at least entirely adept at following instructions.

Though Heizou tends to prefer to work with his hands and not rely on the anemo abilities his Vision gives him, he could really use having access to those abilities right now.

Kate's attempt to catch the feline immediately herds it back in Heizou's direction and he recognises the signs of an animal edging into panic. They might be smart, but hey, they're still cats. Heizou, not being the tallest person, is easily jumped over when it comes to a cat that really wants to get away...

But he doesn't let his quarry get away that easily.

If this had been a normal cat, he would not have been quite so cruel, but this is a thief and therefore he feels entirely justified in his actions as he grabs the cat's tail while it tries to vault over him, and hauls it firmly enough to send the creature flopping awkwardly to the ground.]

Croix is...not one to engage in fisticuffs. She's been in a fight before, of course, but it wasn't her nature to act directly. She preferred to engage using tricks and evasion, working from a distance with the help of proxies and her machines.

But she didn't have her machines anymore. Which decisively put her at a disadvantage when caught up in a mess like this. Croix wasn't about to let that stop her, of course. She threw in with one of the agitators, sympathizing with them over the Shuten Clan—and what's more, it allowed her a chance to work through people, instead of fighting on her own.

And as a result, one could find her slurping what appeared to be a bowl of cup ramen as she sat a distance away from a brawl. Her side was striking back with a combination of tactics designed by Croix, as well as crude devices Croix had managed to whip up with minimal resources (makeshift shock rods, and the like). All in all, they seemed to be doing well for themselves, with her not having to risk anything. All she had to do was give orders via the earpiece connecting her to her new underlings.

In fairness, it wouldn't be hard to spot her and suss out her involvement with all this. She was just kind of sitting out in the open, watching the fight as she ate, after all.

One way to avoid being robbed: Don't carry anything valuable into the café. Croix had done just that, with her intent to simply observe and try and spot the bakeneko based on their behavior with other paying customers. She had simply brought enough to order a coffee, which she sat, barely drinking as she observed.

Unfortunately, the best laid plans had a chance of turning awry. Croix wasn't exactly a cat person herself, but for some reason, the actual cats in this café had decided that she was worth their intention.

"N-No, I don't—" she said, as a furry one leaped up into her lap. Several others were already rubbing at her legs, while another had jumped up on the back of her chair to rub itself against her neck and shoulders, purring all the while. It didn't take long at all before the lavender-haired woman was absolutely inundated with felines.

This definitely impeded her mission. Help her?

It would be far too easy to get in over her head and never see home again. After all the work Larcei's done to free it, she doesn't want to get killed before she can live there.]

...You're right, I don't. [She doesn't doubt that Kaberou is the victim's father or that he could make good on the reward, otherwise he'd have been ignored or shouted down. But... she decides to exercise her mind for a moment.] If Kaberou is so rich and so powerful, he must have his own resources. But he's sending an indiscriminate crowd of strangers against his enemy.

[Her first guess is that they're all meant to be cannon fodder to soften up Iron Bear, but there may be more subtle things at play.]
